The British Museum’s impression bears pencil marks showing changes requested by the Prince Regent. A note on the back signed by the print seller Dominic Colnaghi explains that the Prince had complimented the likeness but complained that it showed ‘too much hair.’
Image: A three-quarter length portrait of the elderly George III. He is seated at a table with his chin propped on one hand, wrapped in an ermine-trimmed silk robe. His face is in profile. He has a long, untidy beard and long white hair.
The political sensitivity of the ageing king's appearance is apparent from the history of this print, which was carefully edited to manage his image.
